Crystal Rodriguez from Houston, Texas runs Prickly Pocket, a shop that specializes in pocket shirts.

Introduce your shop

Prickly Pocket specializes in pop culture pocket shirts based out of Houston, Texas, it ranges from Movies, TV, Music and Books.

The story of my shop is short and sweet. I made my very first shirt as a gift for my best friend, and I saw the opportunity to make some extra money by just making cool shirts. I never thought of pocket shirts before I started this, I just wanted to make something that was different and fun! I'm so glad I ran with it because I think pockets are what makes the shop what it is today! Who would have thought I'd fall in love with doing this! I currently work part-time and spend all the spare time cutting pockets by hand from my bedroom.

When did you turn your craft into a business?

Prickly Pocket

I started Prickly Pocket about February of 2017 after making a shirt as a gift for my best friend. I had a ton of fun doing it and I saw the opportunity to make shirts that show my love for anything!

How did you come up with a name for your store?

I originally wanted to call it 'Pick-a-Pocket' but the name was already taken. Searching for inspiration I went to Target and found a ton of cactus-themed items, and I fell in love! I hurried home and looked for words related to cactus and Prickly was the first thing to come up. Prickly Pocket had the right ring to it.

How did you start selling on Etsy?

I've always been a customer of Etsy, I love that everything is homemade and feels very unique. I knew Etsy would be the perfect place to start. Everything is so easy when using Etsy, anything you need is right there.

Do you talk to your customers? Do you run your website or blog, social media?

I try to provide the best customer service possible, that's the most important thing to me. I always treat my customers the way I would want to be treated when I buy anything. I do have an Instagram for the shop, 'Pricklypocket', I release new designs there and also love to connect with other Houston shops.

What’s your most favorite product?

I want to say all of the pockets are my favorites, in a way they are. Having to choose one it would probably be one of my newest shirts, it's Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in 'Casino'. Those two are my absolute favorite, I grew up watching them so they will always have a special place in my heart.

What are your future goals?

The future goal is to make this my full-time job. Right now I work part-time and spend all of my free time making shirts from my bedroom. I couldn't think of anything better to do than making awesome shirts all day! I would also love to see a random person on the street wearing one of my shirts, that would be a dream come true.

What’s your process from an idea to a finished product?

I start by thinking of my favorite things and work from there. After finding the perfect imagine, I then have to resize everything so it can fit onto the pocket. Once printed I cut every pocket by hand you have a Prickly Pocket shirt!

Where and when do you find yourself most creatively inspired?

It's usually at night from my bedroom. If I find a movie or tv show I love I want to make a shirt for it! I have a collection of over 600 movies so there are endless ideas for shirts.

I love this shop, it has really changed a lot of things for me. It has allowed my creativity to soar while making some extra money. I am looking to making more products other than shirts and it's all thanks to Prickly Pocket!
